Shooting Pasadena

Period homes, shot so they still look like themselves

Pasadena is a historic-home market. Bungalow Heaven is a landmark district of Craftsman houses with deep porches and tapered columns, and Madison Heights has Spanish revival homes with arches and clay tile roofs. The wood, the tile and the warm mixed light are the point of these homes, so we shoot to keep them. We don't flatten them into a bright white box.

The trick is showing a period home at its best without making it look dated. Most of it comes down to white balance. Get it right and the oak millwork, built-ins and leaded glass look warm and rich instead of yellow or muddy. Then a twilight photo of the front (real twilight is in Signature, or an add-on) gives a century-old house the same curb-appeal moment a new build gets for free.

Then there's the setting. Many Pasadena streets run under old oaks and sycamores toward the Arroyo Seco and the Rose Bowl, with the San Gabriel Mountains behind. Up in the San Rafael Hills the houses are newer and the view is the point. A drone pass covers both: the mature trees and the lot on the flats, the slope and the distance on the hill.

A Craftsman with a deep front porch is the classic Pasadena problem: bright sun on the lawn, a dark living room behind the door and warm lamps in between. We bracket the exposures so the built-ins and the oak floor hold detail and the porch doesn't blow out.

Leaded glass, clinker brick, tile and hand-built millwork are what buyers pay extra for, so we frame to feature them, not crop them out. On a Spanish revival home that means the arched doorways, the tile and the ironwork.

Pasadena questions
What does Pasadena real estate photography cost?

The same as anywhere in LA: priced by the home's size. Photos start at $250, and listing packages run from $650 (Standard) to $2,200 (Signature). You see your exact price before you book.

Do you photograph historic and Craftsman homes in Pasadena?

Yes. Pasadena is one of our regular markets, and many of its homes are Craftsman, Spanish revival or other period styles. We keep the oak, the tile and the leaded glass looking like themselves, and real twilight (in Signature, or as an add-on) gives a century-old front porch its evening glow.

Does careful color work slow down a Pasadena shoot?

No. Getting the white balance right on an old house takes care, but it doesn't cost you a day. Photos and drone are in your inbox the next morning. The listing video takes 2 to 4 business days.

Can you handle the mixed lighting in an older Pasadena home?

Yes. A Craftsman with deep eaves and small windows is dark by design, and warm lamps add a cast on top. We bracket every room so the wood and the plaster hold true color without a flat, over-bright look.

Can you fly a drone over a Pasadena hillside home?

In most cases, yes. Airspace depends on the address, so we check each one before we fly, and our pilots work under an FAA Part 107 license. On a lot toward the San Rafael Hills the drone shows the slope and the view. On a flat lot it shows the old trees and the yard.

Which Pasadena neighborhoods do you cover?

We cover Pasadena, from Bungalow Heaven and Madison Heights to the San Rafael Hills, and South Pasadena, San Marino, La Cañada Flintridge and Eagle Rock around it.
